“The reel
“The reel me”
I’m a fisherman, been so since 7 years of age/
When I gathered up a month’s worth of allowance money I saved/
A zebco back then was 30 dollars plus tax/
I gave it over no problem and it was all that I had/
I would go to school and pretend I was casting from the sand/
Because all I wanted was a rod and reel in my hand/
I would read about fish, even memorize different knots/
But when it came to doing schoolwork, I always seem to forgot/
My teachers grew concerned, said I wasn’t like the others/
Things didn’t come easy I had my own set of hurdles/
ADD was diagnosed and so medication was prescribed/
School work became easier for me and I started to get by/
But I could not drop fishing no matter how hard I tried/
Friends came and left my life; it’s my passion that survived/
High school was a fog, and passing college was a storm/
But I would still cast my line at each first mornings dawn/
If I’ve learned anything in life, it’s that you must do what you love/
Ignore the negativity from others, because believing in yourself is enough/
